"ASTONISHINGLY bad" signs on an historic South Lakeland cinema are to be taken down.
New signs have appeared at the Roxy Cinema in Ulverston to highlight the new Empire Carpets, which recently opened its door in the lower part of the building, replacing the bingo club, which closed earlier this year after 33 years.
Members of Ulverston Town Council were told that planning permission had not been obtained for the signs which were emblazoned over the entrance and down the side of the building, making them visible from the main A590 road.
Coun Judith Pickthall branded the signs "astonishingly bad", while Coun Janette Jenkinson said: "There has been a lot of talk about them in the town."
Owner Anne Armer bought the retail space earlier this year and South Lakeland District Council planning officers have spoken to her and asked that they be taken down.
