POLICE are appealing for information after two books worth almost £5,000 were stolen from Westwood Books in Sedbergh, on Wednesday, while the shop was open.
Shop owner Mark Westwood said the person responsible for the theft from a glass display case would have had a good knowledge of books.
The first book, entitled Gerard Herbal, dates back to 1636. It is leather-bound, illustrated with woodcuts throughout and valued at £2,785. The second book, entitled A Synoposis of The Classification of The British Palaeozoic Rocks, is described as a very scarce book that was produced in 1855 by famous Dent geologist Adam Sedgwick. It is valued at £1,850.
Anyone with information should contact police on 0845-3300-247.
