Brenda Marr was handed the chains of office for Ulverston on Monday, and has vowed to be as dedicated at being the mayor as she is helping children cross the road outside Dale Street Infant School.

Coun Gwen Murfin also donned the mayoral gold chains last night as Kendal Town Council held its annual ceremony at the town hall.

The former deputy mayor, who has been a town and district councillor for five years, said she was thrilled and delighted' to accept the post and insisted that there were "exciting times ahead".

She said one of her main tasks would be to look in depth at the Strong and Prosperous Communities White Paper, which has invited Cumbria to replace its two-tier system of government with a one-tier system.
