THE throttle pedal of Donald Campbell's Bluebird boat - which he would have used just before his final record-breaking attempt ended in tragedy - has been recovered from the freezing cold depths of Coniston Water.
The pedal was one of a number of items found by members of the Bluebird Project team, who have been back to the lake to look for remaining pieces of wreckage six years after recovering the main section of the boat.
Using sophisticated sonar technology and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles), and with divers also tackling the recovery, the team has spent a number of weekends in Coniston combing the bottom of the lake.
Team leader Bill Smith said that, following their painstaking search, they were now confident they had collected most of the wreckage. The team is rebuilding Bluebird, and the plan is for her to be displayed in Coniston's Ruskin Museum.
