THOUSANDS of caterpillars will be wriggling their way in wetland across Cumbria, in a bid to revive populations of a rare butterfly.

The marsh fritillary has virtually vanished from Cumbria, which was one of its last remaining strongholds in the country.

Over the years, changes in the way that the waterlogged land that the creature thrives in is used, has led to the butterfly's decline.

Now in a three-year project, Natural England aims to re-establish the species and halt future population decline.
