Merlewood, near Grange-over-Sands, was built for the Manchester businessman Alfred Binyon in 1853.

But the listed building and grounds, used most recently as a research base for the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, could become 54 self-catering apartments for HPB Management Ltd if an application to South Lakeland District Council is approved.
