NINE people were taken to hospital after a chemical leak at a major Furness employer yesterday (Tuesday).
Fire crews were called to Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK)factory in Ulverston at 7.45pm to stand by while specialist personnel at the plant dealt with the leak of Hydrogen Bromide, an acidic gas.
Ambulance crews took nine people to Furness General Hospital with respiratory problems. Seven of these have now been discharged but two were still in hospital in a comfortable condition on Tuesday morning.
A spokesman for GSK said: "The release of the gas had no off-site implications and members of the surrounding community were unaffected." An investigation has been launched by the company.
