EDEN District Council has agreed a near five per cent rise in council tax.

Councillors heard that the 4.99 per cent rise represents a 14 pence per week increase for the average council tax household. It means council tax for an average Band D property goes up £7.31 to £153.91.

A statement from the council said Eden's council tax remains the second lowest of the six districts in Cumbria - South Lakeland District has recommended a 4.5 per cent rise - adding that the authority had "a reputation for prudent financial management."

The rise mirrors a 4.99 per cent increase approved by Cumbria County Council earlier this month.
