TWO Cumbria county councillors opposed a majority vote to reduce Shap Library hours by 25 per cent - the biggest library hours cut in Cumbria, reports Karen Morley.

Shap representatives Conservative County Councillor Roger Bird and Independent County Councillor Colin Nineham voted against the revised proposals to reduce library opening hours in Eden by 16.5 hours and chairman of the County Council Local Committee for Eden, Coun Gary Strong received a petition of containing more than 70 signatures from Eden District Councillor for Shap Neil Hughes.

Coun Hughes, who cycled to the meeting at The Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge, said: "The reduction of opening hours at Shap library from 16 to 12 is the biggest reduction in Cumbria.

"The petition would possibly have had many more signatures if it had not fallen from the prominent position it held in Shap Post Office for a number of days, but more than 70 people had signed it in the limited time it was available."
