POLICE in Penrith have a new tool to assist them in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour in the town.
Carlisle and Eden Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership (CDRP) has unveiled a new re-locatable CCTV camera in the Brougham Street and Mill Street area of Castletown in Penrith.
A StreetSafe initiative which the CDRP ran in October last year showed that this area suffered high levels of crime and anti-social behaviour with the ward experiencing 201 crimes per 1000 population compared with a Cumbria average of 82.
The CDRP has bought four of the re-locatable digital CCTV cameras with one camera being exclusively for the Eden area and is monitored from the Civic Centre in Carlisle and has a direct link to Cumbria Constabulary HQ.
This allows the police to view images in real time and react quickly to incidents in the area.
