SAMMY McIlroy wants his mighty Morecambe to kick on after their guts, grit and determination earned them a 3-1 win at Forest Green on Saturday.

The Shrimps were at their lowest ebb of the season ahead of the game, with Jim Bentley and Ged Brannan suspended and Michael Twiss and Chris Blackburn injured.

But the patched-up heroes came through and McIlroy says: "The boys were fantastic, every one of them.

"They pulled together and the fans got behind us and I was immensely proud."

After an early setback with Rovers taking the lead, the game turned as Garry Thompson created two goals before scoring the third in stunning style.

"Thommo was brilliant and his goal was tremendous. Mark Lillis and myself were right behind it and as soon as he hit it the ball was going in," adds McIlroy.

"Now we need to kick on. It was important to get the three points and I thought the lads were magnificent.

"Danny Adams and Danny Meadowcroft were awesome and I thought Neil Sorvel really got hold of midfield and Paul Lloyd did very well. He has come into the side and has taken his chance."

The manager has also praised the fans, who travelled in numbers to Glouces-tershire to support the Shrimps.

"The supporters were right behind my dugout and never stopped encouraging. It is great and the boys really appreciate their support," he says.

Assistant boss Mark Lillis certainly entered into the spirit as he was seen disappearing into the terrace to celebrate Paul Lloyd's equaliser.

The Shrimps host St Albans on Saturday before a trip to Rushden and Diamonds on Tuesday night.

"St Albans will make life difficult for us and there are no easy games in the Conference," adds McIlroy.

"And then we go to Rushden on Tuesday and it will be tough down there, although it is a fabulous place to play football."

Blackburn may be fit for the St Albans game after resuming training following his knee injury while Bentley and Brannan are available after their bans.

"Jimbo will play, that's for certain," smiles McIlroy.
