MP Since - 1997 Majority - 7,922 Born - 28/09/1953.
Education - Stockport Grammar School, New College, Oxford, London University, Harvard University.
Previous Occupation - Open University tutor/associate lecturer (1977-97); Public relations consultant (1980-85); Chief Public Affairs Advisor to English Heritage (1984-85). GMB member.
Personal Overview - Has experience and some knowledge and likely interest in the written media. He gained early Select Committee memberships in the 1997 Parliament and despite having been a PPS, his career to date has remained on the back benches. Not moving to live in Blackpool on his initial election his constituency activities were presumably done on day trips to the sea-side. His Parliamentary work has been strictly according to the leadership book, to the extent of even trying to publicly defend the Millennium Dome saga. Although traditionally a Conservative town the Boundary Commission has created a marginal constituency in South, and with several Labour-supporting town wards on the credit side, Marsden has a job probably for as long as Labour can win nationally. In the run-up to the age of consent vote (June 1998) he declared his own homosexuality, which may play badly amongst the more reactionary of Blackpool's landladies. A long serving PPS, he has not to date made any progression into Government.
Political History - Parliamentary Candidate, Blackpool South (1992). MP Blackpool South (1997-). Chairman of the All Party Future of Europe Group (1999-). Member of the Deregulation Select Committee (1997-99), Education & Employment Select Committee, Education Sub-Committee(1998-2001). Member of the Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills Select Committee (2007-09), Science and Technology Select Committee (2009-). PPS to Rt. Hon. Lord Irvine of Lairg, Lord Chancellor (2001-03), PPS to Tessa Jowell at the Department of Culture, Media & Sport (2003-05). Member of the Education & Skills Select Committee (2005-07). PPS to Michael Wills (Ministry of Justice) (2007).
Characteristics - Member of the Association of British Editors. Vice Chairman of the Fabian Society.
