YOU could never accuse Noel Bertram of standing still. Not only is the trombonist and conductor one of the most energetic of people, dashing around the county for Cumbria Music Service, but his repertoire of pieces for his young musical protégés in the Westmorland Youth Orchestra continually push out the boundaries.

The next WYO concert, at Ulverston’s Coronation Hall on Saturday, November 29 (7.30pm), is no exception.

Spreading the ensemble’s wings, both geographically and creatively, Noel and the WYO, led by Anna Etherington, share the bill with another of the major players in the region’s music circles – Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band and its inspiring musical director Richard Butler.

And by the time Richard steps on to the podium on the night of the concert, he should know whether he’s landed the Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year award.

So a rousing selection of stage, screen and swing pieces is promised.

The Dambusters march, the overture to Leonard Bernstein musical Candide, and John Barry’s suite from Dances with Wolves all feature, as does a Cussler’s arrangement Star Trek Through the Years and music from the Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring by Howard Shore.

The band’s programme is still to be announced but, no doubt in true UVHS fashion, Richard and his young instrumentalists will choose a set to make the audience sway.

Finally, the tempo soars as the WYO and UVHS Swing Band share the stage to perform three of Dave Brubeck`s best-known numbers - Take Five, Unsquare Danse and Blue Rondo a la Turk.

Dave Brubeck is one of the most well-known jazz pianists of all time. His quartet, featuring Paul Desmond’s saxophone, lasted for 17 years, producing the first-ever million-selling jazz tune (Take Five), toured the world countless times, and introduced the world and his mate to the jazz sound.

These days, Brubeck is still touring and releasing albums at the age of 82, and is a huge influence on musicians around the world, including the young Westmorland and Ulverston players.
