FLEDGLING musicians will get the chance to step up on to the stage as a young bands night takes off at The Plough Inn, Selside.

Set up by Russell Brown – father to a keen young guitarist – the informal session aims to lure talented teens out of the garage and into the pub lounge.

“My son has got a lot of friends who have done nothing more than play in the garage at the back of the house,” he explained.

“We thought it would be a really good idea if we could get a few of them together and give them a chance to get a foot on the ladder and play their stuff in front of other people.

“It’s just a live music venue where young bands can have the chance to play, no pressure”.

He hopes that if the event takes off, it could evolve into a regular monthly session.

The night, which takes place on Friday, November 28, has sparked a lot of interest from budding bands and has attracted a line-up including local band Cacophony, his son Luke’s band, The Riffs, as well as some saxophone and keyboard talent.

Fourteen-year-old guitarist Luke, who has been busy polishing renditions of The Who’s Pinball Wizard and Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog for the new night, said the event was something kids of his age really wanted.

The Queen Katherine School pupil, who makes one half of The Riffs with his mate Adam Martin, said: “It should be a really enjoyable night if we get enough people along.

“I think it’s a really good idea, lots of bands have been really interested”.

Mr Brown, who hopes the informal “no pressure” night will give young musicians the opportunity to meet like-minded youngsters and form their own bands, said the event was open to any school pupils who “has the guts to get up and have a go”.
