Lipstick on the Noose – Martyrs, Murderesses and Madwomen, by Geoffrey Abbott. Summersdale Publishers Ltd, £9.99.

IF YOU are a fan of gruesome and grisly tales you will enjoy the latest offering from Lake District author Geoffrey Abbott.

The book is a collection of tales about women who were tortured and executed by many different ghastly means.

A few were martyrs, some were serial murderesses, and some were mentally unbalanced, while others were totally innocent.

The story of Eliza Ross is typical. She was convicted of murdering her elderly lodger on the testimony of her 11-year-old son. The body was never found, but it was presumed that Ross had sold it to a surgical school for cash.

Ross was hanged and on the scaffold she cursed those witnesses who testified against her, including her son. Ironically, after she died her body was loaded into a cart and given to surgeons, after which it was dissected by students.

Lipstick on the Noose would put off plenty of people but it’s a perfect and ghoulish tale for those who appreciate grisly stories.
