Interview: Jonathan Mayor of Back To Englistan
3:43pm Friday 7th November 2008 in Comedy
HOW best to describe comedian Jonathan Mayor? I don't think I can improve on the words of one reviewer, who summed-up the drag artist with the words: “Imagine a Christmas tree has just exploded all over the campest Bollywood star you know.”
One of the rising stars of the Manchester alternative performance scene, Mayor has been on the stand-up circuit since 2001 after being spotted hosting a Tuesday night pub quiz in his local.
And the great big ball of glitter and glam is coming to King George's Hall, Blackburn, on Tuesday, November 18, as part of the show Anglo/Asian show Back To Englistan.
Jonathan says he's a bit of a fraud though, as he's the only non-Asian performer in the show.
“I'm half Scottish and half Mauritian so I'm a fake,” he laughs.
“I was brought up by adopted parents who are white — a vicar and a headteacher. That's why my accent is so 'street' you see,” he says. (Jonathan sounds more like the queen than his fellow residents in Manchester's Moss Side).
Mayor will be joined by Goodness Gracious Me star Kulvinder Ghir, and comics Mahinder Suniara and Isma Almas.
And he describes the show as “something a bit different.”
“You'll be surprised to learn my show is quite camp," he jokes.
“I tell stories about my life, I wear mad clothes. You could compare my act to Julian Clary and Eddie Izzard. Of course, I'm flattering himself with those names.”
Mayor can't wait to perform in Blackburn, having stormed a previous gig in the town.
“I did a gig at the Frog and Bucket comedy night and I've got to admit when I saw ‘Blackburn’ on my calendar I thought 'Hmm'. But the crowd were great. King George's Hall is a gorgeous building and the audience were really up for it and really fun.
“At the end of my act, when I said ‘I’ve really enjoyed myself’ I actually meant it. So I'm looking forward to coming back."
