A Poulton teenager netted a history-making role when she was selected as the first female captain of an England fishing team.

Lisa Isles, 18, who is an A Level student at Kirkham Grammar School, is set to lead the six-strong Youth Fly Fishing Association's international fishing team.

The team will be hooking up together to compete in Pennsylvania on the east coast of the US in early August to battle it out against numerous other countries including France, Spain and Canada.

Lisa, who lives with her parents Nick and Karen and 21-year-old brother Peter on Little Poulton Lane, became the first girl to be selected for the team in 2003 and has been cast in the role of captaincy in her final year of eligibility.

She said: "To be appointed captain during my last year as a member of the youth team is an honour and I'll be doing everything I can to motivate and lead the team to victory.

"Trout are tricky creatures, and catching in one location doesn't necessarily translate into catching easily in another.

"We are going to need all our skills to outwit the fish."

Lisa credits her love of river fishing to her grandparents who took her to various rivers and fisheries in Lancashire from the time she was a toddler.

"I used to go fishing with my dad and both my grandads, Cyril and Ron, from being a toddler. They gave me the enthusiasm for the sport."

Before Lisa leads her team into battle, they are holding a two-day sponsored fly fishing marathon in the North West in late May, where she will try to catch a trout, which will be returned to the water alive, at eight fly fishing venues in the area.

Lisa is currently looking for sponsors to help the team fly the flag for the UK. Contact her on 01253 883590.
