Movie world premiere in St Annes

A new sci-fi feature film featuring Lord of the Rings star, Sir Ian McKellen, is to have its world premiere in St Annes next week.

Fylde Borough Council's licensing committee is expected to class the Lancashire-made independent film, Displaced, a 12a at its meeting tomorrow (Friday) prior to the movie's invitation-only first screening on Thursday, March 15.

The Skylandian Pictures film, which has sold worldwide through a US distribution company, will be shown at the independent CinemaFour, at The Island, St Annes, from March 16.

It was shot at various locations across the north west and features a cast of rising stars as well as thousands of extras from across Lancashire.

It comes as Lancashire County Developments revealed this week that film making in the county increased by 80 per cent last year with Blackpool being the most popular location.

Produced by actor/director Mark Strange, from Leyland, the film's opening narrative is given by Sir Ian. The story features Stel, a humanoid alien (Mark Strange), who teams up with a British soldier John Marrettie (Malcolm Hankey) to find a top secret file which holds information on advanced energy production. There's also captured space crafts and their alien pilots including Stel's missing father, Arakawa (Geoff Coxhead), imprisoned on earth by Core, a human paramilitary group.

The displaced file falls into the hands of a renegade special forces leader, Wilson (Graham Brownsmith) who plans to sell it to the highest bidder, leading to a deadly game of survival, combat, intrigue and deceit.

Displaced, directed by Wigan-based Martin Holland, was the brainwave of Mark's sister, writer Carol Anne, and has been six years in the making.

The crew received consultation support from Chee Keong Cheung of Lancaster's Intense Productions and Hong Kong film producer, Mike Leeder as well as advice from some of Pinewood's most respected film executives.

Mark said: "We're delighted that Displaced is gaining a Lancashire premiere at CinemaFour, St Annes.

"This is an opportunity for sci-fi action film fans to see it on the big screen before its later release on DVD.

"This is a historic achievement for Lancashire.

"It's not every day that a sci-fi action adventure feature film, with worldwide interest, gets made in Lancashire."
