Pellegrini ponders price of draw

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admits he does not know whether the frustrating goalless draw at Norwich will prove costly in the Barclays Premier League title race.

Pellegrini had made three changes to the side which lost 1-0 at home to Chelsea as they looked to take full advantage of Arsenal's 5-1 defeat at Liverpool.

However, it was the relegation-threatened Canaries - stuffed 7-0 at the Etihad Stadium in November - who raised their game and soaked up plenty of pressure to earn what for them could be a crucial point in their fight to stay up.

Despite dominating for large spells, City failed to create many clear openings after hitting the crossbar in the first half through a header from Alvaro Negredo.

Norwich - who had seen a first-half effort from Gary Hooper ruled out for offside - almost snatched victory late on when Nathan Redmond's cross flew through the six-yard box just ahead of Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

City are now in third place, two points behind new leaders Chelsea.

"I don't know if it's a missed opportunity because today Norwich played a very good game. They defended very well and we couldn't score," said Pellegrini.

"I was concerned about this match and it was exactly the same when we played Chelsea because we have a lot of players who are not 100 per cent fit.

"Maybe it was a good opportunity, but we are still two points behind the leaders."

Pellegrini accepted his previous free-scoring side lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

"(Yaya) Toure played today in a defensive role and that's why we lost a little bit in attack, but at the moment Fernandinho and (Javi) Garcia are not fit," he said.

"It's exactly the same with our strikers, with Negredo and (Edin) Dzeko, but I don't think that's the reason why we didn't score in the last two games.

"They are not 100 per cent. Dzeko has an ankle in a very bad condition which is why he played just 30 minutes and Negredo has a problem with a shoulder but they had to play in that condition.

"Yaya had to play today a little bit back because we did not have another defender who could play in that position."

The City boss added: "Everybody has been talking about how many goals we score and how we concede them when we defend, but the most difficult thing is scoring goals.

"In the last two games, with our strikers not being fit, we couldn't do it and without a goal you can't win a game."

Toure appeared to kick out at substitute Van Wolfswinkel during the closing stages, which was not spotted by referee Jon Moss.

Pellegrini said: "I am not concerned about that. I didn't see it."

For Norwich, the performance was a vast improvement on the reverse fixture in Manchester and manager Chris Hughton believes it could go a long way towards shaping the remainder of their campaign.

"It's difficult to play a normal game against City. We knew defensively we had to have a good shape, but we also knew we had to be a threat," said Hughton, who was without Ryan Bennett, Robert Snodgrass and Jonas Gutierrez through injury.

"We had to be disciplined and also a threat on the ball and keep possession. I thought we did most things right today.

"We were up against arguably the best team in the country and you have to show something.

"We will have to show a lot of that when we go to West Ham (on Tuesday night), we will certainly need a fair chunk of what we had today."

Hughton hopes his own side can find their own touch in front of goal to pull clear of danger.

"We have had some clean sheets against good opposition, but we have just fallen short at the other end," he said.

"That's one thing that we have to address because we probably had three good chances."

Hughton also maintained he did not get a good view of the clash between Toure and van Wolfswinkel.

"I must admit I've not seen that afterwards," he said. "He's a strong character, Ricky. I'm not aware of it but if that was the case then I'm sure enough people will have seen it."
