Kerrigan and Woakes handed Test debuts
England sprang a huge surprise on the first morning of the fifth Investec Ashes Test, handing debuts to all-rounder Chris Woakes and spinner Simon Kerrigan at the Kia Oval.
The hosts are 3-0 ahead going into the final match against Australia, allowing them a rare chance to experiment, but even so these changes were not expected.
Out-of-form batsman Jonny Bairstow dropped out alongside the injured Tim Bresnan, with England changing the entire shape of their side by going for a five-man attack featuring Woakes' medium-pace and a second spin option in Lancashire left-armer Kerrigan.
That meant disappointment for Chris Tremlett, who had been expected to make a first appearance in 18 months on his home ground, and fellow paceman Steven Finn.
Australia, who had a debutant of their own in all-rounder James Faulkner, won the toss and opted to bat first.
