Luke Wright was an early, but not yet worrying, casualty of a damp England training session in Whangarei on Saturday morning.

England's Twenty20 specialist batsman had to sit out the remainder of the practice session after hurting his right hand in fielding and fitness drills at the Cobham Oval.

An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman confirmed there was no need for any scan on Wright's injury - a strain between his fingers after catching his hand on the outfield.

But he nonetheless took no part in the two hours of batting practice which followed, as England were restricted to throw-downs in the middle and outdoor and indoor nets because of regular showers on a cloudy day.

Twenty20 captain Stuart Broad was therefore unable to test his recovery from the heel injury which forced him home early from England's Test tour of India before Christmas.

He is still hoping to be fit, however, in time for Monday's first warm-up match here against a New Zealand XI - and will be wiser about those prospects as long as the weather allows him and his bowling colleagues to practise their frontline skills on Sunday.

Among them, Chris Woakes was also limited to range hitting on the Cobham square as he tries to put himself in the frame for selection.

Woakes, returning to New Zealand after a short spell with Wellington before Christmas, is relishing his opportunity after being named in England's squads in all three formats on this tour.

"It's great to be here," he said, having played twice two in England's 3-2 one-day international series defeat in India last month. "India was good, but this is a new challenge now out here in New Zealand.

"The conditions are different to India, and we need to test them out and get used to them. But most of all, we've got to look to win the (two warm-up) games and get some good momentum going into the actual series."
