I'd give up career, Kidman says

Nicole Kidman has said she would give up her Hollywood career if her husband asked her to.

The actress, who won an Oscar in 2003 for her performance in The Hours, said she would not have taken on her latest role as Grace Kelly in the biopic of the filmstar-turned-princess's life if Keith Urban had asked her not to.

She told the Mail on Sunday: "If he said no, I wouldn't have done it. That's how we are.

"I know this sounds old-fashioned but I do put it on the table. Because if it won't work for us, then I'm not doing it."

Asked if she would ever choose between her family and her career, the 46-year-old said: "Yeah, if he asked me. No question."

Kidman, who wed country music star Urban in 2006 following a 10-year marriage to movie star Tom Cruise, also said she found she had more in common with Kelly than she thought.

Grace Of Monaco, which stars Kidman as the American actress and Tim Roth as her husband Prince Rainier, has been almost universally slammed by critics after it opened the Cannes Film Festival this week.

"A lot of the struggles that she had, I've had," she told the paper.

"Not in terms of being a princess, but the gilded cage and motherhood versus career versus responsibility versus the desire to put good in the world.

"All of those struggles and the desire to keep a marriage together. All of those things are very relevant to me. She is very human in her desires and that is what surprised me in the script."

The film caused controversy before it was screened with rumours of behind-the-scenes clashes and condemnation from the royal family in Monaco, with Kidman saying she now regrets turning down the chance to meet them.

"Now, subsequently, I wish I would have gone, because I would have been able to explain to them the intentions," she said.
