Garstang 37 Blackpool RUFC 7

Blackpool RUFC were without the expertise of Heath George at number 8 and also Barry Tucker, who stood in at that position was carting an injury picked up in last week's match.

The visitors however did not let that phase tem as they gave a good account of themselves.

It seemed as though Blackpool were still suffering in their old ways when they went behind to an unconverted try in the 1st minute of the match closely followed by another in the 8th minute to take the Garstang lead to ten points without reply.

This however seemed to wake up the Blackpool side as they then began to compete in the game and put together some good attacking moves which they were unfortunate not to convert into points.

They managed to hold out until the 35th minute of the half when, due to a lapse in their concentration, they allowed Garstang to score again to take the total to the half time 15-0.

The second half was soon underway when, after only two minutes, Blackpool were back to their old ways when the let Garstang score three tries in quick succession, one of which was converted to take the score to an unassailable 32-0.

Blackpool came out of their shell yet again in the match to apply more pressure to the Garstang defence and, in the 23rd minute, were rewarded with a converted try.

This came about when the visitors were awarded a penalty 5 metres from the Garstang try line and a quick thinking Phil Raw took a tap penalty and burst over the try line to score before the opposition could organise their defence.

The try was converted by stand off Sean Donnelly to take the score to 32-7 in Garstang's favour.

The home side had one more throw of the dice when they scored another unconverted try to bring the score to the final 37-7 in their favour.

Blackpool, apart from the first ten minutes of each half, played some of their best rugby of the season and should be encouraged by this and try to build on it.

They have had some new players come down to training during the week which, along with the Junior Colts "coming of age" bodes well for the future.
