Blackpool RUFC under-16s first game of the season against Fylde was always going to be tough.

Blackpool started the stronger and scored when quick penalty under the posts was put through the back line enabling winger Ryan Holmes to score.

Fylde didn't let this panic them and were rewarded with a converted try.

Blackpool regained the lead midway through the first half when good play from full back Grant Blackshaw drew several defenders before he passed to opposite winger Ross Mellor-Clark who split the defence open with his direct running to score.

From the restart, Blackpool's pack dominating up front gave quick ball to in-form scrum half Jake Ellwood who fed along the back line to Holmes, who, with a fantastic hand-off, got his second.

But Fylde's scored under the posts and, with the conversion going over, the half time score was 22-12 to Blackpool.

Blackpool started the second half strongly with centre Gary Lunt, making a return and allowing winger Ross Mellor-Clark to outsprint his opposite number and score under the posts.

Then fly half Dave Collis gave captain Ben Holland the chance to score. Holmes converted.

Jamie Salter scored the final try of the game. A Holme conversion made the final score 41-12.

lThree Blackpool under-16s are celebrating after being selected for the final trials for Lancashire. Ben Holland, Grant Blackshaw and Gary Lunt were selected after a trial at Preston Grasshoppers on Sunday.
