North Manchester 30 Blackpool RUFC 3
9:33am Tuesday 28th October 2008 in Blackpool RUFC
It was another day at the office for the Blackpool 1st XV as they took to the field in rainy and windy conditions against their North Manchester rivals in this North Lancs 2 fixture.
Although playing with a weakened side due to unavailabilities, the Blackpool team came out with all guns firing which somewhat frightened the opposition.
In the first ten minutes Blackpool dominated the game winning their own scrums and taking the North Manchester scrums against the head. Their backs were also dominant and run the ball at every opportunity.
Blackpool were rewarded in the 11th minute when the trusty boot of Leon Mason converted a penalty to open up the scoring to 3 – 0 for the visitors.
This seemed to galvanise the home side as they started to come back into the game, so much so that they equalised after only 16 minutes when they scored a penalty of their own.
Blackpool seemed to retire into their shell after this score and North Manchester managed another 3 unconverted tries to take the score to the half time 18 – 3.
After some stern words from the coaching staff and some of the senior players, Blackpool took to the field for the second half having changed the team around slightly.
They again dominated the play from the outset and played the majority of the half in opposition territory.
South Manchester only managed to get into the Blackpool half of the field on two occasions and both times they scored tries, one of which was converted taking the score to the final 30 - 3.
Once again Blackpool, although playing with a weakened side, were unable to transform pressure into points.
With some clinical finishing there was no reason why the Blackpool side should not have come away with a victory; something that they urgently need to correct if they are to get into the upper half of the league.
