Blackpool 7 Clitheroe 18
9:40am Monday 13th October 2008 in Blackpool RUFC
Blackpool started the match as if they had something to prove and took the lead as early as the third minute.
After a well worked forwards move at which the Blackpool pack countered anything thing the opposition could throw at them; there standoff, Heath George jinked his way through the Clitheroe defence to score under the posts.
The conversion was easily scored by Leon Mason to open up the score to 7–0 in favour of the home side.
This, alas, was to be Blackpool’s only score of the game.
After only 6 minutes Clitheroe pulled the score back by 3 points when they kicked a penalty.
Blackpool continued to pressurise the Clitheroe defence but were unable to cross the opposition try line, a problem that was to haunt them throughout the game.
In the 20th minute Clitheroe scored again; this time it was converted to take the score to 10 – 7 for the opposition.
In the dying minutes of the first half Blackpool were awarded a penalty but unfortunately George, who had assumed the kicking duties for the match, was unable to convert his attempt.
In the second half, Blackpool continued to pressure the opposition defence but were unable to convert this into points on the board.
In the 11th minute Clitheroe scored an unconverted try to take the score out to 15–7.
Blackpool continued to apply pressure but were unable to cross the line and in fact, Clitheroe scored again in the 44th minute of the half when they kicked another penalty to take the score to the final 18 – 7.
Blackpool 2nd XV went down to local rivals by 65 – 0 in the Miller Homes League 5N fixture with hooker Richard Parlour getting the Man of the Match award for Blackpool.
