Blackpool started brightly but were 3-0 down after giving away a penalty.

They carried on their probing until the 20th minute when flanker John Williams had to be substituted due to a back injury. Birchfield the took over and scored an unconverted try due to a breakdown in a Blackpool attacking move.

Blackpool came back to score just before half time when Tom Cockcroft charged the ball down from a clearance kick and he went on to score near to the posts to make it 8-7 for the home side at the break.

Blackpool stand off had gone down with a groin injury on the stroke of half time though, and as the team already used all their substitutes he gallantly agreed to continue in the second half playing on the wing but soon had to go off. Birchfield then took control and scored a further 22 points thanks to four tries and a conversion.

They did not have it all their own way as Blackpool put together some attacking moves of their own, one of which resulted in a penalty which Trevor Smith accepted on his team's behalf.
