Fylde Storm claimed the honours in the Thornton 10s tournament held in honour of Thornton player Robbie Mckendrick who was tragically killed in a road accident in June.

The Storm combined a blend of youth and experience and this squad whose average age is just 20 were just too strong on the day.

The Storm were drawn in league 2 with Thornton B, Garstang and last year's tournament champions Hutton.

Storm got of to a great start with a convincing victory over hosts Thornton B by 45 points to nil. Storm's try scorers were Adam Lewis (2), Richard "DC" De Carpentier, John Embelton (2), David Winterflood and Frazer Spavin. Embelton and Rob Whittam converted 2 tries apiece and Mark Edwards notched one.

Storm's next game was against Garstang and once again Storm's blend of pace and power was just too much for Garstang resulting in a 47-0 win.

The 7 tries were shared between Adam Lewis, Embelton (2), Matt Hughes (2) and Mark Edwards (2). Edwards converted 4 tries and Embelton 2.

The 3rd group match was a tougher encounter against an experienced unbeaten Hutton squad but the Storm stepped up their game and won 12-0 through tries from Embelton and Hughes and a conversion from Embelton.

Unfortunately this match signalled the end of the tournament for Matt Thompson with a badly broken finger.

Thompson a recent recruit from Fleetwood had shown great promise in his first two games.

The Storm ended the group stages at the top of their league with a points tally of 104 for and none against and a place in the semi final against 2nd placed Thornton A.

The semi final was a close affair and Thornton made for determined opponents, the young players in the Fylde team were showing their nerves, but the athletic power of Richard "DC" De Carpentier who notched 2 tries calmed the nerves and a further try from John Embelton, plus 3 conversions from Mark Edwards sealed the vicory by 21 points to 5.

The final matched the Storm against Hutton who beat Millom in the other semi.

The glorious sunshine was now replaced by driving rain which unsettled the Storm and Hutton showed their mettle by scoring the opening try which they converted to lead 7 0 at half time.

Skipper Adam Lewis and Coach for the Day Alan Holmes' words of encouragement at half time soon paid dividends when Storm scored early on in the second half and again it was DC who notched the try.

This gave the Storm renewed vigour and Rob Whittam scored following a clever kick and chase, Mark Edwards converted to give Storm a 12-7 lead.

Hutton came back strongly but the Storm's effective defence held firm.

Storm completed the scoring when DC notched his second try when following a ruck just inside their own half scrum half James Smith, making his senior Fylde debut at the tender age of 17, released DC on the left and his power and speed saw him hold off the scrambling Hutton defence to score under the posts.

Edwards converted to give a final score of 21-7.

Robbie McKendrick's father handed over the cup to Storm Skipper Adam Lewis, a former team mate of Mckendrick from his days at Thornton, which was a fitting end to an excellent day.

Fylde ended the tournament as top scorers with 144 points comprising 22 tries and 17 conversions and only conceded 12 points.

Top points scorer was John Embelton with 40 points. This was a great squad effort with all 14 playing an important part in the victory.
