Manager not happy following final game

KIRKHAM & WESHAM FC has played its final game of 2007 and manager Mick Fuller is far from happy about it.

Fuller, who saw Saturday's eagerly awaited clash with Darwen called off just 10 minutes from kick-off time at the Anchor Ground because of a waterlogged pitch, said later: "While the decision to cancel at the time was the right one, the fact is that we shouldn't have been in Darwen.

"The game should have been called off earlier in the day if there was a chance things might get even worse."

And how ironic that Kirkham's final game of 2007 should be given the thumbs down by Wesham referee Chris Parsons, who earlier in the morning must have created some sort of record when he inspected the Kellamergh Park pitch at Warton and called off Kirkham reserves clash with Oldham Town too before journeying to East Lancashire and giving his opinion on the Division Two match at Darwen.

He said: "All over the Darwen pitch wasn't good.

"But had it not rained heavily while we were inspecting for a final time then we might have given it a go.

"As it was there really was only one decision to make and in consultation with my assistants and the team managers l reluctantly called it off."

Boss Fuller added: "My main concern was my own players safety.

"In some areas I was ankle deep in water and that's not good.

"Their manager was desperate for us to play saying that he had nine new outfield players from the game we played against them in the Second Division Trophy a few weeks back.

"I told him that l was bringing my first-team today so it wouldn't be as easy as he thought it might be.

"We didn't play a full first team at Darwen in the Trophy but we still managed to beat them 2-1 so l think that didn't rest easy with them."

Kirkham's next game is at Kellamergh Park on Saturday next, January 5 (3pm) when they take on Ashton Athletic in what is a crucial Division Two top of the table encounter, with both sides in the promotion pack.
