Super sub and leading goalscorer Sean Patterson surfaced from a rare start on the bench to hand Parkgate a knockout blow at Kellamergh Park, Warton, on Saturday October 6, in the FA Vase First Round Proper.

Paterson, the former Blackpool and Southport striker answered the call to duty when coming on for the injured Andy Taylor, victim of a back strain for whom he'd lost his starting place to just minutes before kick-off, and within four minutes had glanced a Mick Horsfall ring wing cross into the back of the Yorkshireman's net to give Kirkham a deserved lead.

And 60 seconds later strike partner Mark Wane fired home when put clear from Andy Richards telling pass to put the home side into cruise control.

And with Parkgate, a side based at Rawmarsh near Rotherham, pushing for a way back into the tie in the second-half, keeper Darren Bonnington gave his side a mountain to climb when he lost the ball.

A back pass by defender Darren Green went horribly wrong and Paterson was on hand to slip in his 11th goal in 11 games to effectively put the tie out of reach for the South Yorkshire side.

Ged Smith curled in Kirkham's fourth from a 35 yard free-kick with five minutes to go to add to the Tykes misery in the final minute, Wane was again on hand to rubber stamp his claim for the Man of the Match award with a neat finish to hammer the final nail into the Steelmen's coffin before being substituted after taking a knock.

Scorers: Kirkham & Wesham - Paterson 25, 63, Wane 36, 90, Smith 85.
