The local derby between St Annes and Fleetwood at Vernon Road on Saturday was very much a one-sided affair writes Gerry Wolstenholme.

St Annes had 12 points in the bag just after 5pm after they had won the toss, put Fleetwood in to bat, bowled them out for just 91 and then knocked off 93-2 in just 20.4 overs to wrap the game up.

Fleetwood reached 18 without any alarms but then the calamities began as James Ellis chopped a ball from Joe Davies into his stumps and he was gone for seven. Davies had Zac Taylor caught at point for 12 at 33-2 and professional Paul Harris, five, edged Ian Austin to St Annes new professional Arshad Khan at second slip at 42-3.

Only when Michael Clinning, 23, and Wayne Clarke, 22, were together did Fleetwood look as though they would make a defendable total, but once they had gone the rest went down like a pack of cards.

Davies caught Clinning off Khan at 60-4 before Clarke was the first of three wickets to go down with the total on 75. He was leg before wicket to Khan who then bowled Nick Coultas first ball before Michael Baer had Adam Sharrocks stumped by Duncan Whalley for three.

Baer bowled Steve Hill for a duck and had Tom Wilson caught and bowled off a leading edge for two before some brief resistance by Tom Blundell, three, and Dave Fish, 11 not out, took the total to 91 at which point Russ Bradley's direct hit from backward point ran out Blundell. Khan finished with 3-21, Baer, who was not introduced until the 31st over, 3-7 and Davies 2-26.

St Annes set off like a house on fire with Adrian Darlington, 23, and Gareth Evans, 17, putting on 37 for the first wicket before the former was caught at square leg by Taylor off Hill. Evans edged Taylor to Ellis at 74-2 by which time Austin was in full flow. He faced 47 balls, four of which he struck for six, and he was 50 not out, with four fours also, and Whalley was two not out when St Annes cruised home by eight wickets with 93-2 on an evening that belied its 24 June date with a temperature in the low teens.

Fleetwood 91, St Annes 93-2.
