A team of ten Blackpool Wyre and Fylde athletes travelled north of the border to compete in the Scottish Junior Indoor Championships at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, last weekend.

Although no less than seven members of the team were girls, James Davies emerged the hero of the weekend, taking the gold medal in the under 17 mens triple jump with a combined leap of 12.95m and only missed a second gold in the long jump by the narrowest of margins.

He leapt 6.30m to secure the long jump silver behind Doonoon Athletic Club's Nathan Jege who won the event with 6.32m.

Not to be outdone, the club's sprint queen, Laura Davies, won a well earned silver medal in the under 20 women's 60m sprint with a time of 7.90 secs, while her training partner, Lucy Mansfield, also took silver in the same event for the under 17 women in 7.99 secs.

Lucy was,in fact, only fractionally behind the winner, Glasgow's Laurie McKenna, who was timed at 7.96 secs.

The club also secured two bronze medals at the championships with Declan O'Hara clearing 3.40m for third place in the under 17 men's pole vault and Lucy Mansfield taking her second medal of the championships with a bronze in the 200m in an excellent time of 25.79 secs.

English Schools high jump champion, Hannah Dickson was unlucky to miss bronze, on countback, after clearing 1.65m the same height as the eventual bronze medallist.

The other members of the team all performed above expectations, with Katy Wyper tantalisingly missing the finals with 4th position in both the under 17 women's 60m semi-final with 8.14 secs and the 200m semi-final with a time of 27.28 secs.

Matthew Wright came a highly creditable 8th in the under 20 men's pole vault final with a clearance of 3.70m while Natasha Butler and Megan Sweet finished in 11th and 15th places in the under 17 women's high jump final with clearances of 1.50m and 1.40m respectively.

In the heats of the under 17 women's 60m sprint, Natasha Butler was placed 4th in a time of 8.72 secs Robyn Starkey was also 4th in 8.75 secs and Megan Sweet, 5th in a time of 9.21 secs Robyn also competed in the 200m sprint where she was placed 5th in 29.67 secs.

At the time of going to press, Carl Myerscough is once again named in the British team for the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain, next month with a qualifying distance of 20.16m for the shot putt event which he achieved last year.

The club's international distance runner, Antony Ford, has also been officially placed 3rd in the 10000m UK track rankings for 2007 with a time of 28 mins 44.27 and 9th on the road with 29mins 21 secs.
