Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Athletic Club extended their lead at the top of the North of England track and field league with a convincing win on home soil at Stanley Park last weekend.

The club's two 400m specialists, Brent Starkie and Ted Romney emerged the stars of the meeting by both breaking the 50 second barrier in their respective races.

Starkie established a new personal best performance of 49.1 seconds to win the A race by almost 20 metres and Romney clocked 49.7 seconds to take the B race by an even greater margin.

This is the first time in the club's history that two of it's runners have broken 50 seconds in the same meeting and is a tribute to the coaching skills of the club's former distance international Brian Craig.

James Davies traded places with his great rival Walter Lombe of Wigan Harriers by winning the triple jump with 13.11m against Lombe's 12.54m but had to be content with second place in the long jump with 6.0m against Lombe's winning jump of 6.45m.

In the middle distance races, Antony Ford won the 800m B race in 2 minutes 00.6 seconds and was third in the 1500m A race in three minutes 56.8 seconds while Lytham's Jono Prowse won the 1500m B race in 4 minutes 00.6 seconds and Poulton's Tom Cunningham was third in the 800m.

In the distance events, Luke Minns and Malc Edie were runners-up in the 5000m A and B races while Stuart Robinson and Chris Lloyd were third and second respectively in the 3000m steeplechase A and B races.

Bob Wyper won the hammer throw B event with a throw of 29.8m although the Myerscough clan doubled up in the discuss with Grant taking second place in the Aevent with 39.43m while father Dave was runner-up in the B event with 27.73m. Jon Rutter easily won the triple jump B event with a distance of 11.77m and in the absence of a pole vault competition, Matt Wright had to be content with third place in the high jump with a clearance 1.60m.
