Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Athletic Club did emerge as runners-up to Blackburn Harriers in the National Young Athletes league match at the Stanley Park Arena with 390 points behind Blackburn Harriers 418 with Wakefield AC a distant third on 344 points.
Lucy Mansfield and Lytham schoolgirl, Sophie Riley both achieved sprint doubles in their respective age groups with Mansfield taking the under 17 womens 100m in a fine 12.30 seconds and the 200m in 25.3 seconds while Riley clocked 12.7 seconds for the under 15 girls 100m and 26.1 secsonds for the 200m. Beth Towers was also a double winner for the under 15 girls taking the difficult 75m hurdles title with a time of 11.9 seconds and the long jump with a leap of 4.95m.
A poor turnout of senior athletes resulted in BWFAC being relegated to third place in the latest fixture of the Mid Lancs track and field league at the Preston Sports Arena at the weekend.
The club also slipped to third place in the overall Division One league placings, being overtaken by host club Preston Harriers who ran out easy winners on their home soil with 215 points - 35 clear of second placed Bolton United Harriers with BWFAC a distant third on 142 points.
The Blackpool ladies finished the day just six points short of Preston, and they still top Division One with 720 points, well clear of second placed Bolton on 446 points with Preston a further 21 points adrift in third place.
