Carl Myerscough, the club's British shot putt record holder, who lives at Knott End, Over Wyre, reaffirmed his standing as the country's No1 shot putter at the Aviva National Championships and Olympic Selection Trials at Birmingham, last weekend.

Myerscough won the event with a throw of 20.15m. well ahead of his arch rival, Mark Edwards, who could only manage 18.55m. at the championships.

Although Myerscough's winning throw was well clear of the Olympic "B" qualifying standard of 19.80m. - he will have to wait for the outcome of the Dwain Chambers court action to learn whether he is eligible for inclusion in the GB team for Beijing.

The club's other Olympic aspirant, Antony Ford, finished in a disappointing eighth position in the 5000m.in a time of 14 mins.07.90 secs - well outside the Olympic qualifying mark of 13 mins. 28 secs and it now appears that only Mo Farah, who has already been selected for Beijing, will represent GB in either the 5000m or 10000m.Olympic events.

Earlier in the week, five club members travelled over to Manchester to compete in the Trafford Grand Prix at the Stretford track.

Antony Ford was an easy winner in the 3000m. with a time of 8 mins. 21.65 secs.

In the same event, Tom Cunningham was placed 7th.in 8 mins. 52.75 secs; Luke Minns.9th. in 9 mins. 02.32 secs. and Phil Leybourne.13th. in the exceptional time for a veteran athlete of 10 mins. 36.97 secs.

In the mixed events, Gemma Unsworth continued her present good form by placing second lady in the 3000m. in a time of 10 mins. 36.97 secs.

Five BWFAC athletes, representing Lancashire, reached the finals of the prestigious English Schools Championships at Gateshead.

James Davies came a creditable 6th. in the intermediate boys long jump with a leap of 6.33m. behind the winning jump of 6.89m. by Dwyte Smith of Kent.

In the senior girls events, Laura Davies was disappointed with her time of 12.49 secs. for 7th.place in the 100m. final which was won by Rebekah Wilson of Manchester in 12.02 secs. whilst Lucy Mansfield was also placed 7th. in the inter girls 200m.sprint in a time of 25.52 secs.

In the pole vault events, Declan O'Hara achieved a well earned 8th.position in the inter boys final with a clearance of 3.80m. which was only 15cm. less than his senior clubmate, Matt Wright who was placed 11th.in the senior boys pole vault with a clearance of 3.95m.
