The club's sprint queen, Laura Davies of Kirkham, was the toast of Scotland, at the weekend, when she took the 100 metres crown at the Scottish Athletics East and West District Closed Senior Championships, at the Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh, in a winning time of 12.36 secs.

Later in the week, however, she competed in the Loughborough International Athletics meeting in the Midlands where she was disappointed with her time of 12.67 secs which earned her only 7th place in the 100m final.

A squad of eleven BWFAC athletes represented the club in the Northern Athletics under 17 and under 15 championships at Robin Park, Wigan, emerging with one gold medal, three silver and two bronze for their efforts.

James Davies continued his fine early season form by snatching the under 17 mens' long jump title, with a distance of 6.40m from his arch rival, James Hardy of Sale Harriers, who was only 4cm behind with 6.36m Hardy, however, reversed the tables in the triple jump, where he took the gold medal with 14.11m just 3cm ahead of Davies on 14.08m.

Lydia Critchley also struck silver in the under 15 girls 800m where she clocked 2 mins 20.30 secs behind Kirsten McAsian of East Cheshire Harriers(2.18.82).

A further silver medal came in the under 15 girls 75 metres hurdles where Bethany Towers was only 1/10th second behind Micaela Brindle of the host club, Wigan, who took the gold in 11.53 secs.

Declan O'Hara won the bronze medal in the under 17 mens pole vault with a clearance of 3.50m and Kirkham's Lucy Mansfield won a well earned bronze in the under 17 womens' 200m with a time of 24.46 secs although she just missed out on the medals in the shorter sprint where she took 4th.place in an excellent time of 12.27 secs.

Other under 15 finalists at Wigan were: Lytham's Sophie Riley who came 5th in the 200m in 26.02 secs; Megan Sweet of Clifton who came 6th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.40m and Daniel Quarmby who was 14th in the 1500m final in five mins 10.34 secs.

In a high class under 17 womens 1500m final, where no less than ten athletes broke the 4 min 50 secs barrier, Poulton's Kristie Leybourne ran a well judged race to finish in 4 mins 48.53 for 8th position behind Kate Avery of Shildon AC who set a new championship best performance of 4 mins 29.60 secs.
