The generosity of people throughout the Fylde has begun to show with a cracking early response to the Citizen's Tins and Toys appeal.

The Christmas campaign is set to make a real difference to families unfortunate enough to be affected by domestic abuse.

The Citizen is collecting new toys and essential goods for Fylde Coast Women's Aid, which operates two refuges covering the boroughs of Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre and offers support to hundreds of others.

All we ask is that gifts are new and unwrapped, and tins and unperishable foods are within their sell-by date.

Toiletries for the mothers would also be appreciated, as would nappies and items for babies.

Staff from Fylde Coast Womens' Aid popped into The Citizen offices on Clifton Street yesterday to see the many items already donated by readers and local businesses.

Service manager Marilyn Haye, said: "It's heartening to see the response so far and the quality of the items already donated.

"As well as toys, we've had things such as toiletries and food items which will help sustain the refuges well into the new year.

"Every family connected with our organisation will benefit greatly from the Citizen readers' help and support."

Readers wishing to make a donation can call in to our offices at 13-13A, Clifton Street, Blackpool, during office hours.

Fylde Coast Womens' Aid helpline is on 01253 596699 from 11am - 9.30pm, Monday - Friday and noon-9pm at weekends.

Outside those hours the national helpline is 0808 2000247.
