Lancashire's Woolworths stores will shut

WORKERS at Lancashire's branches of Woolworths are set to be made redundant after it was announced all its stores will shut.

Administrators Deloitte confirmed this afternoon that all of the chain's stores will close by January 5.

In Lancashire, the chain had stores in Accrington, Blackburn, Blackpool, Burnley, Chorley, Cleveleys, Clitheroe, Lancaster, Morecambe, Nelson, Preston, Rawtenstall and St Annes.

Deloitte said that the closure would affect 22,000 permanent staff and 5,000 temporary workers.

The closure programme will be phased with stores being given 10 days notice before shutting.

Shopworkers union Usdaw has attacked the decision saying that it was 'disappointing' a buyer had not been found.

"The Wonder of Woolies", and "Nothing over Sixpence" two of the famous slogans of a once famous store going, going, and nearly gone. The Post Office lads under threat and Mandelson backing part privatisation takeover by a European company of our postal services. The Euro overtaking the £1, Troops being pulled out of Iraq to boost the lads in Afghanistan who are fighting an unseen enemy. What next consciption ? Reminds me of 1929 and 1939.

Woolies was an institution, a pleasure to shop in for young and old, my 9 year old son dashed to |Woolies as soon as we got into Blackburn, and I could get the things I needed to as Woolies sold everything! Such a shame, and I cant imagine how the employees are feeling right now at the prospect of being jobless in the new year in this economic climate. Looking for new employment myself at the moment, as my job is also going in the first half of next year, I know that there are NO jobs in East Lancs, unless yo want to hard sell or cold call. These are hard times indeed, a very sad state of affairs not just for the country but for our community and region. All the best to those who have lost their jobs at WOolies, and good luck to you.
