A dangerous rottweiler which ran amok in Cleveleys has been put down after a joint effort from the council and police.

Concerned residents called Wyre Borough Council's animal welfare team on Tuesday to report that the dog was loose in the streets around Cumberland Avenue and had already attacked several people.

Attending dog warden Karan Bowyer was herself bitten as she tried to control the animal.

But she was able to quickly protect the public from further attack by using her van to try and contain the dog in a nearby garden and distract it while she alerted police.

A number of armed officers and others with riot shields attended the scene, helping to pin down the dog which was sedated by a vet until the owner could be located.

The dog was later destroyed with the owner's agreement under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Karan Bowyer said: "We have a joint protocol in place with the police that allows us to bring incidents like this to a swift conclusion and minimise any danger to the public, which is always our main concern.

"On this occasion the dog was clearly out of control and could easily have caused serious injury or worse to anyone who got in its way.

"Joint working and the police's swift response to my call proved to be a key factor in making sure that didn't happen."
