Work to construct a £125million waste processing facility in Thornton is well on its way to completion and the site is on schedule to open its doors in February 2010.
Work on the Thornton Waste Technology Park on the former ICI site on Bourne Road is hidden away from public view but is on target for its initial completion date.
The construction of the facility is a result of a partnership between Blackpool Council, Lancashire County Council and Global Renewables, an Australian based waste processing company, and once complete will treat 276,000 tonnes of waste which will come mainly from the Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde areas.
Coun Ian Fowler, cabinet member with responsibility for waste services, said: “The new site will revolutionise the way waste is handled in Lancashire and I hope that it will act as a benchmark for all other authorities in the country.
“Having this innovative facility so near to Blackpool will mean that we make savings on our haulage costs as well as reducing our carbon footprint.”
