Two 17-year-old girls have been killed in a car crash in Lancashire last night.

They were in a Renault Clio which left the road and hit a tree before ending up in a field in Poulton-le-Fylde around 10.15pm.

Two men, aged 18 and 20, who were travelling in an accompanying vehicle, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and are currently being questioned by Lancashire Police.

Both girls are from Blackpool but have not yet been named by police.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said that at 10.15pm on Sunday, police were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Garstang Road in Poulton.

He added: "On arrival, police found a Renault Clio had left the road and collided with a tree before ending up in a field. Sadly the two girls, believed to be both 17 years of age, who were in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

"We are appealing for anyone who saw the vehicles travelling prior to the incident.

"We are appealing for a pedal cyclist who was at the scene but then left before passing his details to police.
