Plans for a new heath centre in Poulton have been temporarily withdrawn after talks with planners.

NHS North Lancashire wants to relocate both the town's GP surgeries and clinic into a new state-of-the-art building on the site of St Chad's Church Hall and the local tennis club off Vicarage Road.

But following a meeting with Wyre planners, the developer has withdrawn the current application and will resubmit a revised scheme early in the new year.

A spokesman for Wyre council said: “Concerns raised at the meeting related to the massing and the materials as well as routes connecting with the park.

“On this basis the developer will revisit the scheme with a view to addressing the concerns and will look at stepping back the first and second floors on the park side as well as pulling back the building line around the cafe.

“The developer will also look at introducing a more traditional palette of materials such as brick and render and will carefully consider how the function of the building relates to the park and existing and proposed routes.

“Once the developer has amended the design the application will be re-submitted along with supporting information.”

Original plans included reversing the town’s one-way system so that any vehicle approaching Poulton from Lower Green or Hardhorn Road would be directed towards Queensway or Blackpool Old Road, allowing traffic heading towards Carleton and beyond to avoid Chapel Street and Ball Street.

The medical centre plan is opposed by St Chad's tennis club, whose courts will be swallowed up to make way for the development.

More than 200 people attended a public meeting on Tuesday at The Edge pub to discuss the plans and another meeting is likely in the New Year.

It is expected the revised scheme will be resubmitted in January.
