The handing over of the Olympic flag to London is being celebrated 250 miles away in Wyre this weekend.

A commemorative flag will be hoisted at Poulton Civic Centre at around 2.30pm on Sunday 24 August, the same time as the Mayor of London receives the official flag from the Mayor of Beijing to mark the closing of the 2008 games.

Wyre Borough Council is delighted to be joining hundreds of towns and cities across the country for the simultaneous ceremony, for which a unique standard has been commissioned. It carries the London 2012 logo but in the traditional red, white and blue colours of the Union flag.

Mayor of Wyre Councillor Gordon McCann, who will carry out the honours at the Poulton event, said: "This is an historic occasion for the nation as a whole and we are thrilled to have been given the opportunity to join in at a local level.

"It shows Wyre's support for the 2012 games, which could well feature some of our local sporting stars. We have got more medals "
