Lytham’s Britain in Bloom entry gets recycling boost

Lytham's Britain in Bloom entry is being given a green boost by a Lancashire recycling firm.

Waste management firm SITA UK is to provide the compost that will make the town's gardens grow into potential winners.

Over five tonnes of compost created from green garden waste collected from homes and household waste recycling centres across Lancashire is being delivered to local contest organisers.

Ray Walker, SITA UK's assistant manager for composting operations in the north west, said: "Our compost is helping to grow better plants in gardens across Lancashire so it is great that we are now assisting with a major display that could see another Britain in Bloom award coming to the county."

Lytham has won the Coastal Resort category of the North West in Bloom award for the last three years and must win the title again this year to qualify for the national finals in 2009.

The compost will be used on the flowerbeds on Preston Road, one of the most prominent sites that visitors see as they enter the town.

The display is the centrepiece of the town's entry.

Jim Leak, chairman of Lytham in Bloom Trust said: "This is a very important year so we're very grateful for SITA's support.

"The compost will be invaluable in helping us to get the best from this year's displays and hopefully ensure that we are again successful in the Britain in Bloom competition.

"We aim to improve on last year's displays by heightening the flowerbeds and creating more imaginative and stunning displays."
