A rugby club has proved it’s more than a good sport after providing a free venue for a thriving older people’s luncheon club which was under threat.

When Fylde Rugby Club heard that the Cameo, (Come And Meet Every One) club, run by Age Concern could not afford to rent a venue, they stepped in to provide a permanent home for free.

The luncheon club now meets every Monday at Woodlands Memorial Ground, Ansdell, Lytham.

Older people can have a healthy, freshly prepared three course meal in warm and comfortable surroundings.

Those attending often meet new friends and listen to occasional guest speakers.

Susan Campbell, who runs the club, said: “All of this could not happen without the support of a group of loyal volunteers and Fylde Rugby Club.

“They have been great in providing the social club to the Cameo members at no cost.

“This is a great example of a community partnership which helps older people in the Fylde area.”

Fred Harrison, general manager of Fylde RFC, said: “Fylde Rugby Club is continually striving to achieve its goal of being not only a great sporting venue, but equally as important, a place of focus for the local community. “As part of this drive we are delighted to assist Age Concern Lancashire with the provision of their weekly luncheon club.

“What was originally a temporary situation has now become permanent and hopefully long lasting and a partnership which has tangible benefits to the whole community.”

A similar lunch club opened last week in Poulton.

It will be held every Thursday from 10am till 2pm and is organised for the local older community by the charity.

The venue is the Methodist church on Queensway.

The cost is £4 for a two course hot meal, with tea or coffee on arrival.

Special guest speakers and information will be available.

Activities include bingo, cards, dominoes and quizzes.
