Work has started on a multi-million pound development that is promising to transform health care in St Annes.
The new St Annes Primary Care Centre will be home to two GP practices, a dental surgery and a pharmacy, as well as accommodating district nurse and health visitor facilities and car parking.
The development, which will transform derelict industrial land between Stephen Street and Durham Avenue, is due to open in the summer of 2009.
Michael Goode, a director at Croft Goode, the Kirkham-based architects behind the design of the building, said: “We were asked to produce a modern, practical and sustainable building design that would provide healthcare fit for the 21st century for the residents of St Annes.
“We are fully confident our design will allow the NHS trust to deliver excellent local health services.”
The building replaces St Annes Clinic on Headroomgate Road which closed in spring 2007 because the building was no longer suitable.
The Dr M Zaryckyi and Dr P J Moorhouse GP practices, in Park Road and Clifton Drive, will be relocating to the new centre.
Philip Hargreaves, head of estates for North Lancashire Teaching Primary Care Trust, said: “We are very excited that work has now begun on this cutting edge healthcare facility.
“We know that for many people this development cannot come soon enough as care services have had to be displaced to a number of other sites since the closure of St Annes Clinic.
“This significant multi-million pound development will also bring two GP practices together from outdated premises into what will be a brand new, sustainable, fully compliant building.”
The project is being developed by Rushcliffe Healthcare Ltd.
Harry Ashworth, their managing director, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this project which will allow local doctors to provide a better service for patients, who will no longer have to travel longer distances to get the care they need.
“This development is also a boost to the local area as it replaces industrial buildings from the turn of last century and so it will significantly improve the area for local residents.”
