Because of the hopelessly confused, ill thought out and idiotic EU fisheries policy, between 40 and 50 per cent of cod caught has to be thrown back into the sea dead.
Yes, it is hard to believe, but it is true.
Jonathan Shaw, the fisheries minister, floundered like the eponymous flat fish, while trying to explain a fisheries policy that absolutely defied rational explanation.
This latest prime example of EU idiocy is matched only by the infamous CAP, where, it will be recalled, the hapless taxpayer had and still has to pay to keep the price of food high.
This latest insight into the Gotham City of the EU confirms that it has never been of the slightest benefit to Britain.
