Former Blackpool council leader, Roy Fisher, has been selected as the candidate to contest the vacant seat in Park Ward left by the death of Coun Les Kersh last week.

The election is expected to take place on Thursday June 26.

Mr Fisher said: "It is a great honour to have been selected to succeed Coun Les Kersh as the Labour candidate for this election in Park Ward.

"Les was a respected, reliable and hard working councillor who represented the ward for 25 years.

"He made a great difference to the lives of the residents of the ward and I would like to continue his good work alongside his fellow Park Ward representative Brian Doherty."

Mr Fisher was ousted from his seat following last year's local elections in the town which saw the ruling Labour group lose power to the Conservatives.

Coun Kersh, 69, who represented the Park ward for almost 25 years, died on Sunday, April 20, after a prolonged period of ill health.

It was his lot that destroyed Blackpool. The day Fisher was unseated was a great day, just a shame Ivan Taylor didn't go as well. We all know Labour will win anyway, Grange Park always votes Labour, god help them.

Oh dear, not exactly a very structured comment left here by “CJ”. Such a shame they never really made a constructive argument. Sounds like another angry resident of Blackpool who doesn’t really know why they are angry, just know they are. Perhaps Labour gets voted in because that’s who we vote for on the estate.

I am angry because Labour destroyed this town over 16 years of misery between 1991-2007 part of that time led by Fisher and I don't want him back in, good riddance I said to him and his terrible council last May. This by-election is pointless. Blackpool suffered under Labour and I don't want them back
