A new green machine which will keep Fleetwood's grassy areas neat and tidy without costing the earth, council bosses have pledged.

The ride-on Hybrid 2500E mower has been purchased by Wyre Borough Council as part of its pledge to improve air quality and reduce pollution in the borough.

Powered by a mixture of electric and diesel, the mower is much more environmentally friendly than its predecessor and has the potential to cut fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent.

Sound levels are lower too and the council aims to make further savings as the motors require little, if any, maintenance.

The Hybrid is based at Marine Gardens, Fleetwood, and will be used primarily to keep the amenities there in top condition.

However, it will be rolled out to other green spaces around the borough where necessary.

Mark Billington, Parks and Open Spaces Manager for Wyre Borough Council, said: "As a council committed to looking after the environment, we are always searching for alternative fuel sources for our vehicles and this particular mower will allow us to keep the area green in every sense of the word."
