A playground with a difference is to be built on Fleetwood's waterfront.

Designs have now been completed for the project, which will transform a large area of land north of Fleetwood Leisure Centre.

These draw on the park's unique seaside position and incorporate existing materials such as timber and sand to create a natural play environment.

Informal kickabout areas are also included in the plans and the size of the area allows children plenty of space to run free.

Links to the adjoining beach also widen the scope for more imaginative play.

Construction will start early in the new year and youngsters should be able to make use of the new equipment in March.

Meanwhile members of the public can get a sneak preview of the designs inside Fleetwood Library until Friday and at the Marine Hall until the end of next week.

The £70,000 project has been funded by Lancashire County Council via the Lancashire Fair Play Playbuilder Initiative and Wyre Borough Council.

Councillor Lynne Bowen, living healthily portfolio holder for Wyre Borough Council, said: “We wanted to move away from the traditional idea of brightly coloured swings and slides fenced off by railings. Instead we wanted the design to reflect the park's unique positioning on the seafront.

“The natural environment and large open space we envisage will allow children to be much more adventurous in their play.”
